Architecture and continuing use

Steps and a moulded plinth support a square pier with corner columns, carved uniformed figures and inscriptions. A fluted cross rises above the entablature, while low walls, railings and gatepiers define a small commemorative enclosure.

Its story

Alexander Murdoch designed the memorial in 1922 for those killed in the First World War. Names from the Second World War were added later, and Fife Council approved repair and refurbishment works in 2017.

Why it is included

Category C listing recognises a carefully composed district memorial whose sculpture, inscriptions and enclosure remain central to local public memory.

What to notice

  • Three relief-carved servicemen below a laurel wreath.
  • The tall fluted cross with foliate centre.
  • Names distributed across several faces of the sandstone pier.

Reading the surroundings

Approach from public paths and road crossings with care. Treat the enclosure as a place of remembrance, keep gates and inscriptions clear and do not climb or sit on the monument.
