Architecture, archaeology and continuing use

Harled walls with painted margins unite two blocks of different character. The western range rises to dormered attics, while the eastern range retains a tripartite window and the trace of a former pend.

Its story

The visible building is chiefly late eighteenth-century, with later dormers and commercial alterations. Successive adaptation has allowed the premises to remain in hospitality use rather than becoming a static historic shell.

Why it is included

The hotel adds accommodation, food and social history to the launch group while illustrating how several traditional buildings could be joined and modernised.

What to notice

  • Two distinct ranges beneath slate roofs.
  • Canted dormers with small gable heads.
  • Blocked pend expressed in the eastern frontage.

Reading the surroundings

This is an operating hotel and licensed venue. Public access is for guests and customers during advertised hours; respect bedrooms, private events and staff instructions.

What we know — and what remains uncertain

The official business history describes a tradition extending beyond the securely dated listed fabric; this account avoids assigning an unsupported foundation year.
