Architecture and continuing use

A rectangular rubble church with pointed openings anchors a group that also includes the former school or church room, burial ground, gatepiers and retaining wall. The ensemble expresses worship, teaching and communal burial within one bounded site.

Its story

The church was built in 1844 during the rapid expansion of Free Church congregations after the Disruption. Renovation in 1896 renewed the building while the associated school and burial ground retained the wider institutional layout.

Why it is included

A complete church, education and burial-ground group adds denominational and social breadth to Dornoch’s predominantly civic launch cohort.

What to notice

  • The relationship between the church and lower former school.
  • Rubble walls contrasted with tooled dressings around the openings.
  • The gatepiers and retaining wall defining the Church Street edge.

Reading the surroundings

The Free Church directory confirms an active congregation. Attendance and any interior visit should follow published service or contact arrangements; the burial ground requires respectful access.
