Architecture and continuing use

The slightly humped bridge uses squared sandstone, a single broad arch and a coped parapet. Paired dies enliven the outer parapet and squared voussoirs meet neatly at the crown.

Its story

Built in 1861, the bridge forms part of the historic road south from Ayr through Doonfoot toward Dunure. It remains distinct from the nearby Millennium cycle footbridge.

Why it is included

Its clear engineering form and continuing transport role extend Ayr’s record beyond major civic and Burns-related landmarks.

What to notice

  • Single broad arch viewed from the riverside.
  • Squared voussoirs meeting at the crown.
  • Paired dies punctuating the otherwise plain parapet.

Reading the surroundings

Use public pavements and nearby paths with care. Do not confuse the road bridge with the separate cycleway bridge or enter the carriageway for a view.
