Architecture and continuing use

A tall rubble tower and adjoining palace range enclose a courtyard reached through a reconstructed gatehouse. Timber galleries and steep roofs reveal the major twentieth-century restoration phases.

Its story

The Boyds developed the castle after receiving the Kilmarnock lands. Fire, abandonment and later restoration preceded its present museum role.

Why it is included

It combines medieval architecture, nationally important collections and open public landscape within the town.

What to notice

  • Mass of the tower beside the lower palace range.
  • Courtyard galleries and gatehouse.
  • Differences between medieval masonry and restored fabric.

Reading the surroundings
