Architecture and continuing use
The single-storey front is built in coursed rubble with carefully droved ashlar margins. A central door with rectangular fanlight sits between two windows, while original glazing, gable lean-tos and short coped chimneys retain the building’s domestic character.
Its story
The cottage was built in the early nineteenth century to serve the walled-garden landscape around Erskine House. It remained through the estate’s later hospital and hotel phases and was listed with the wider service group in 1979.
Why it is included
Category B listing recognises an intact small estate dwelling whose restrained detail gives human scale to the formal mansion and working garden.
What to notice
- Rectangular fanlight over the central doorway.
- Precisely droved stone window margins.
- Lean-to additions at the gable ends.
