Architecture, archaeology and continuing use

A two-storey and attic five-bay centre block is flanked by lower two-storey ranges. Harled walls, painted margins, twelve-pane sash windows and a slate roof give the extended building a coherent traditional frontage despite modern dormers and rear additions.

Its story

The hotel’s present interpretation dates its coaching-inn origins to 1780, while the national designation characterises the surviving fabric as early nineteenth century. Recent family-led renovation returned the landmark to active hospitality use.

Why it is included

Category B listing recognises an extended coaching-inn form whose continuing hotel use preserves the social history of the river crossing and road settlement.

What to notice

  • The long composition of centre block and lower end ranges.
  • Traditional sash windows against the harled walls.
  • The north-end oriel window.

Reading the surroundings

Public access is limited to the hotel’s advertised hospitality areas and hours. Respect guest accommodation and staff-only spaces.

Timeline

  1. Circa 1780 Current hotel history places the coaching inn’s origin in the late eighteenth century.
  2. Early 19th century The principal surviving ranges took their traditional harled form.
  3. Recent years A major refurbishment revived hotel, dining and bar use.

What we know — and what remains uncertain

The exact relationship between the 1780 foundation claim and the surviving masonry has not been established through building archaeology.
