Architecture and continuing use

Snecked rubble walls carry ashlar dressings, a transeptal plan and a three-stage buttressed tower. The advanced south front centres on a carved doorway and six-light traceried window. A pierced battlement gives the tower a crisp skyline.

Its story

George Reavell designed the building in 1907 for the West United Free Church. Its gallery, organ position and stained glass retain the worship setting, while adaptation created the halls and meeting spaces of a community centre.

Why it is included

Category B listing recognises a strong late Gothic church design and a constructive change of use that keeps the building central to local gatherings.

What to notice

  • Carved segmental head above the main doorway.
  • Six-light window filling the advanced gable.
  • Pierced battlement around the tower parapet.

Reading the surroundings

Check the centre’s diary or contact the trust before entering. Respect private bookings, staff areas and safeguarding requirements, and do not assume tower or gallery access.

What we know — and what remains uncertain

The designation identifies the former congregation but not the date of conversion. Current bookings and room access change frequently.
