Architecture, archaeology and continuing use
Polished ashlar forms an asymmetrical two-storey elevation of round-arched windows. Pilastered openings, pedimented outer bays and a central inscribed panel give the public building a formal but compact presence.
Its story
The combined town hall and customs house was completed in 1862 as the planned town’s municipal confidence grew. It survives as a council-managed hall rather than a static civic monument.
Why it is included
Continuing communal use and a clear mid-Victorian civic design make the hall important to both architectural history and everyday public life.
What to notice
- Round-arched windows with keystoned heads.
- Pedimented outer bays.
- Central panel inscribed “Town Hall, 1862”.
Reading the surroundings
The hall opens for booked or advertised activities rather than as a continuously staffed heritage attraction. Follow event or council arrangements and respect any private booking.
