Architecture, archaeology and continuing use

Cream brick walls and red sandstone dressings enclose a faceted hall beneath a slated roof and central ventilating fleche. Stepped timber seating surrounds the balustraded ring, while metal ties radiate through the intricate roof structure.

Its story

Wallets Marts established the Castle Douglas operation in 1888 and the purpose-built hall followed around 1900. The original ring remains in everyday use as part of a business that continues regular livestock sales.

Why it is included

Category A status, exceptional completeness and uninterrupted agricultural function make the mart one of the strongest buildings through which to understand Castle Douglas as a market town.

What to notice

  • Cream brick and red sandstone colour contrast.
  • Faceted roof with skylights and ventilators.
  • Stepped seating encircling the timber sale ring.

Reading the surroundings

This is an operating livestock market. Attend only publicised sales or arranged visits, follow staff instructions and keep clear of animals, vehicles, loading areas and private business spaces.

What we know — and what remains uncertain

The designation dates the ring to about 1900 rather than identifying a precise opening day or architect.
