Architecture and continuing use

A painted two-storey frontage follows the curve of Main Street, retaining Georgian proportions, sash windows and traces of shopfront composition. A modern library volume sits behind the preserved street fabric.

Its story

The buildings had become derelict by 1978 and were considered for demolition. Their façade and gable were retained when the present library opened in 1985.

Why it is included

The conversion demonstrates practical town-centre conservation: old street character supports an active public service.

What to notice

  • The slight curve of the Main Street frontage.
  • Pilastered ground-floor treatment.
  • The contrast between retained front and rebuilt rear library.

Reading the surroundings

Use published library hours and accessible entrance information. Do not assume staff areas or upper fabric are available to view.

Timeline

  1. Late eighteenth century Two adjoining buildings established the surviving Main Street frontage.
  2. 1978 A photograph recorded the properties in derelict condition.
  3. 1985 The restored frontage reopened with a new public library behind it.
  4. 2026 North Ayrshire Council continued to list Beith as an operating library.

What we know — and what remains uncertain

The exact division between original masonry and 1985 reconstruction is clearer in plan than from a casual street view.
