Architecture and continuing use
Coursed red sandstone, slate roofs and deep bracketed eaves unite a symmetrical single-storey and attic composition. Advanced gabled entrances articulate the centre, while outer gabled blocks and dormers bring variation. Tall octagonal chimney stacks are especially important to the terrace’s silhouette, although several doors and windows have been renewed.
Its story
The 11th Duke of Hamilton initiated the 1856 building scheme, which also included Douglas Row and Brodick Primary School. The planned terrace belongs to the estate-led reshaping of the village during its nineteenth-century growth. HES listed the group in 1994.
Why it is included
The terrace represents domestic planning and estate patronage, adding workers’ or village housing to a cohort otherwise rich in public and visitor buildings.
