Architecture and continuing use
The 1862 hall presents a giant four-column Doric portico and triangular pediment in red sandstone. Streamlined curved wings and horizontal strip windows were added around 1930, creating an unusually legible collision of Victorian classicism and cinema modernity.
Its story
Built as Alexandria’s public hall, the building hosted meetings and entertainment before receiving a cinema licence in 1911. It became primarily the Hall Cinema, closed for films around 1973, continued as a bingo venue until 2009 and was later used for furniture retail.
Why it is included
Category B listing protects one of Alexandria’s few surviving historic public buildings and an especially clear record of changing popular entertainment.
What to notice
- The four giant Doric columns of the original hall.
- Curved 1930s wings clasping the older façade.
- Egyptian-influenced portals and surviving boundary ironwork.
Reading the surroundings
Treat the interior as commercial rather than public heritage space. Enter only if a current business is open and permits it; otherwise view from the pavement without blocking doors or parking areas.
Timeline
- 1862 The town’s new public hall opened for meetings and entertainment.
- 1911 The hall received a licence to show moving pictures.
- Around 1930 Modern curved wings accompanied its cinema conversion.
- 2009 The final bingo operation closed before later retail use.
What we know — and what remains uncertain
Current trading occupation was not confirmed from a first-party operator in 2026; the record therefore describes the most recent documented commercial use cautiously.
