Architecture and continuing use

The rectangular church uses squared red sandstone, painted dressings and a sharply pitched slate roof. A shallow gabled porch, pointed doorway, leaded window and deep-set side lancets concentrate decoration on a compact chapel form.

Its story

Malcolm Stark designed the church in 1877–78 for Alexandria’s Methodist community. When inspected in 2007 its timber pews, pulpit, chair and much of the earlier decorative scheme remained, with original roof timbers above a later ceiling.

Why it is included

Category C listing recognises a distinctive and comparatively intact local example of the plain but carefully detailed Methodist chapel tradition.

What to notice

  • The arrowhead finial above the entrance porch.
  • Deep-set pointed windows along the side wall.
  • Painted ashlar dressings against the red sandstone.
