Architecture and continuing use

Gabled classroom ranges, large grouped windows and ventilating features express the planning of a late-nineteenth-century board school. Restoration retained its strong roadside profile while adapting the interior.

Its story

The school followed the 1872 Education Act and was designed by prolific Highland architect Alexander Ross. After pupils moved in 2015, a council-backed conversion created archive, meeting and office spaces.

Why it is included

The project demonstrates how a purpose-built school can retain architectural identity while taking on a sustainable civic use.

What to notice

  • Repeated gables and broad classroom windows.
  • Former ventilation details along the roofline.
  • Relationship with the neighbouring Charles Kennedy Building.

Reading the surroundings

Use the archive centre’s advertised opening and appointment arrangements. Offices and records stores are controlled spaces; follow staff guidance.
