Architecture, archaeology and continuing use

The front house uses squared dark rubble, pinned joints and pale dressings. Canted wallhead dormers rise in the outer bays, while the rear cottage runs parallel as a two-bay rubble building with a gable doorway and its own stacks.

Its story

The principal cottage was built in the middle nineteenth century and gained dormers later. The rear dwelling added another independent domestic unit within the same plot, a compact response to limited settlement ground.

Why it is included

Category C listing recognises both the decorative street frontage and the survival of a secondary cottage largely hidden behind it.

What to notice

  • Painted joints articulating the dark rubble front.
  • Paired canted dormers at the wallhead.
  • The parallel alignment of front and rear cottages.

Reading the surroundings

Both buildings and the garden are private. Remain on the public street and do not enter side passages or attempt to view the rear cottage without permission.

Timeline

  1. Mid-19th century A well-finished cottage anchored the street plot.
  2. Later 19th century Canted dormers increased light and attic accommodation.
  3. Later period A small rear dwelling added another household to the property.

What we know — and what remains uncertain

The rear cottage date, relationship between occupants and present division of the property were not independently confirmed.
