Architecture, archaeology and continuing use

The original three-bay cottage has a central plank door under a slight rise in the roof. A two-bay extension repeats the raised entrance treatment and retains an enlarged shop window, with pantiles and later sheeting distinguishing the two parts.

Its story

The cottage was built about 1800 and the extension probably followed soon after. Its broad window and separate doorway allowed retail activity to sit directly beside domestic accommodation.

Why it is included

Category B listing recognises an early vernacular cottage with unusually clear evidence for a small village shop.

What to notice

  • Two doorways each marked by a raised roofline.
  • The enlarged former shop window.
  • Different roofing materials over house and extension.

Reading the surroundings

Treat the premises as private unless a current business clearly invites entry. View from the public street without approaching boarded openings.

Timeline

  1. Circa 1800 A three-bay cottage established the original High Street frontage.
  2. Early 19th century A continuous addition created a separate shop space.
  3. Later period Roofing and window closures recorded changing use.

What we know — and what remains uncertain

The goods sold, duration of shop use, present occupancy and internal arrangement were not independently confirmed.
