Architecture and continuing use

An octagonal ashlar basin stands within a circular pool. Rough-faced and polished bands, carved monograms, flower basins and diminishing copper-tipped tiers combine engineering with a catalogue of granite finishes.

Its story

Aberdeen Corporation opened Victoria Park in 1871. John Bridgeford Pirie designed the fountain in 1878, reportedly first intended for Union Terrace Gardens; recent community and council work has restored its presence in the park.

Why it is included

Its Category A status and unusually explicit connection to local quarries and masons deepen Aberdeen’s granite story beyond buildings alone.

What to notice

  • Contrasting colours and textures of fourteen granites.
  • Small flower-shaped water outlets at the octagonal corners.
  • Greek-derived ornament and copper upper tiers.

Reading the surroundings

View from public park paths. Do not enter the basin; water operation and nearby surfaces vary with weather and maintenance.

What we know — and what remains uncertain

Water operation is seasonal and maintenance-dependent; the record confirms the restored public monument, not continuous flow.
