Architecture and continuing use

Droved and stugged ashlar walls carry a slate roof. Round-headed front windows, simpler side openings and a projecting tower with belfry use Romanesque forms rather than the Gothic detail common in later Victorian churches.

Its story

The congregation erected the building in 1843, the year the Free Church separated from the Church of Scotland. Later religious reorganisation changed its role, and the council’s conservation appraisal records present use as a church hall.

Why it is included

Category C listing recognises one of the earliest buildings raised by a Free Church congregation and a continuing community use within the village.

What to notice

  • Round-headed Norman Revival entrance and windows.
  • Projecting front tower and belfry.
  • Contrast between dressed front and simpler side elevations.

Reading the surroundings

Use only for advertised activities or with permission. Do not assume the hall is staffed or open outside events, and keep residential approaches clear.

Timeline

  1. 1843 A Free Church congregation erected the new worship building.
  2. 1980 The early Norman Revival design received listed status.
  3. 2023 The council appraisal recorded the building’s function as a church hall.

What we know — and what remains uncertain

The HES statement still uses an older description of dereliction, while the later council appraisal records hall use. Event schedules were not independently checked.
