Architecture and continuing use

Ashlar walls form a crenellated octagon around pointed-arched windows and a projecting north tower with polygonal stone spire. The retained enclosure now frames sky rather than a roof.

Its story

John Paterson built St Paul’s in 1807 for Perth’s growing population. After closure and long disuse, conservation retained the walls and steeple while creating an open public space.

Why it is included

Its unusual plan, major townscape role and inventive response to redundancy make it one of Perth’s most instructive adaptive-reuse projects.

What to notice

  • Octagonal plan visible from the square.
  • Crenellated parapets and narrow corner shafts.
  • Five-stage tower and stone spire terminating the High Street vista.

Reading the surroundings

Use the public square and follow event or maintenance closures. The retained historic fabric should not be climbed or treated as unrestricted backstage space.
