Architecture, archaeology and continuing use
Rubble masonry and slate roofs frame a nave with aisles, a corner steeple, two western towers and a roof flèche. Inside, cast-iron columns support galleries beneath a plaster-ribbed ceiling in a spacious concert-hall arrangement.
Its story
The 1876 building replaced a Free Church erected soon after the Disruption. Later denominational change brought it into the Church of Scotland, and it now serves as one of the worship centres of Cowal Kirk.
Why it is included
Category A recognition reflects architectural scale, intact character and the church’s importance to Dunoon’s nineteenth-century religious and urban growth.
What to notice
- The octagonal spire rising from the staged corner tower.
- Twin square towers and rose window at the opposite end.
- Cast-iron columns supporting the gallery system.
Reading the surroundings
Attend services or events according to current congregational information. The church is not assumed open at other times, and worship takes priority.
