Architecture, archaeology and continuing use
Ashlar walls frame separate former library and house openings around a tall vehicle pend. A rear stair turret and low ranges include stone that may have been reused from Sanquhar Castle.
Its story
Built as a mixed institutional and domestic property, the building later ceased to house the public library. The registered 2026 local plan identifies it as the headquarters and offices of Sanquhar Enterprise Company.
Why it is included
Its adaptive community use and possible reuse of castle masonry connect civic enterprise with the town’s older fabric.
What to notice
- Five-bay frontage divided into former library and house.
- Cobbled vehicle pend through the front range.
- Conical roof over the rear stair turret.

Timeline
- c.1820–1860 The library, house and pend were formed on the High Street.
- 1971 Statutory listing recognised the mixed institutional building.
- 2026 The registered local plan recorded community-enterprise headquarters here.
What we know — and what remains uncertain
The designation’s “library” name is historic; the current council library occupies a different High Street address.
