Architecture and continuing use

Several buildings are unified by painted ashlar, a balustraded parapet and a commanding Ionic Venetian window above the principal entrance. Varied storey heights reveal the hotel’s growth across adjoining tenements.

Its story

A house on this site had become an inn by 1699. The present frontage largely dates from around 1810, and twentieth- and twenty-first-century work has sustained the building as a hotel.

Why it is included

The Salutation links Perth’s coaching, hospitality and associational history with an active use capable of revealing historic public interiors.

What to notice

  • The oversized Ionic Venetian window.
  • Changing floor levels across the joined tenements.
  • The continuous balustrade used to bind the frontage together.

Reading the surroundings

The hotel is a commercial property. Public hospitality areas depend on opening and booking; bedrooms, functions and service areas remain private.
