Architecture, archaeology and continuing use
The long single-sided stand retains a glazed canopy, cast-iron roof trusses, timber panels, ventilators and slate roof. Modernised bars, kitchens and hospitality rooms occupy its interior while the historic spectator front remains legible.
Its story
Racing moved to Musselburgh in 1816 and McDermont and Murdoch designed this stand in 1886 on the site of an earlier golf pavilion. Late-twentieth-century revival and new facilities retained the old stand within a modern racecourse.
Why it is included
The Category C building is a scarce survivor of Victorian sporting architecture and links racing, golf, leisure and tourism.
What to notice
- Glazed canopy carried on iron trusses.
- Timber-panelled spectator elevation.
- Bellcast ventilators and weather vanes along the roof.
Reading the surroundings
The stand lies within an operating racecourse. Enter only with the appropriate raceday ticket, booking or venue permission and follow staff instructions and restricted-area controls.

What we know — and what remains uncertain
The interior has been substantially modernised, and access to individual historic spaces depends on racecourse operations.
