Architecture, archaeology and continuing use

Squared rubble and ashlar dressings form a symmetrical two-storey front with a central advanced bay. A Thomsonesque doorway, arched window, tripartites and small bellcote give the restrained public building a distinctive civic presence.

Its story

Built in 1876 as a school, the building later accommodated the burgh library and museum. Closure for access and safety concerns led to a major redevelopment, after which the library and Coastal Communities Museum returned in complementary public uses.

Why it is included

The Category C building shows successful civic adaptation and provides a direct point of entry to the town’s documentary, social and maritime history.

What to notice

  • Central Italianate bay and bellcote.
  • Thomsonesque entrance detail.
  • Adaptation of former classrooms for library and museum use.

Reading the surroundings

The library has regular public hours while the museum operates seasonally. Check each service before visiting, respect events and collections, and follow staff guidance on photography and room access.
