Architecture and continuing use

The symmetrical sandstone school is organised around advanced crowstepped bays and a square entrance tower. Crenellated wallheads, carved fox stops, quatrefoils and shaped hoodmoulds enrich the street front. Inside, a two-storey Doric arcade surrounds the central hall beneath a curved timber roof and banked rooflights.

Its story

The building opened as a single-storey school in 1895. A carefully matched early-twentieth-century campaign raised it to two storeys and created the commanding interior hall. Later classroom and hall additions followed. Current council information continues to place New Stevenston Primary at the Coronation Road East campus.

Why it is included

Category C listing recognises a prominent board school whose unusual vertical enlargement preserved a coherent exterior and created an exceptionally well-crafted communal interior.

What to notice

  • Crowsteps, quatrefoils and curled fox corbels on the gables.
  • The square entrance tower and iron brattishing.
  • The central hall’s sandstone arcade where authorised access permits.
