Architecture and continuing use
An octagonal shaft carries a chamfered and crocketed cross. A projecting band is carved with thistles, an embossed sword occupies the west face, and the two-tier pedestal stands on a platform. Copper panels name the dead of 1914–18 and 1939–45.
Its story
The memorial was erected around 1919 after the First World War. A second copper panel was added to record those killed during the Second World War. Listing in 1994 recognised the monument’s architectural and communal interest as part of Maxwell Park.
Why it is included
It introduces public memory and named local loss into a Place otherwise dominated by trade, institutions and domestic building.
