Architecture and continuing use

A 140-foot central span and two 72-foot side spans form shallow segmental curves between red-sandstone piers and abutments. Cantilevered steel construction produces a markedly lighter and broader crossing than the older masonry bridges nearby.

Its story

The bridge opened in 1938 as the A74 bypassed the village centre. Motorway construction later displaced long-distance traffic, and the route became the B7078. Council roadworks in 2025 confirm its continuing highway role.

Why it is included

Category B listing recognises an early large cantilevered steel road bridge and the engineering scale of interwar trunk-road modernisation.

What to notice

  • The long 140-foot central steel span.
  • Red sandstone supports beneath the shallow arches.
  • Older Nethan crossings visible within the same route corridor.

Reading the surroundings

This is an active road bridge. Use designated pedestrian provision, follow traffic management and never stop in the carriageway to view the structure.

Timeline

  1. 1938 Milton Bridge opened on the improved A74 corridor.
  2. 1960s Motorway development reduced its long-distance trunk-road role.
