Architecture, archaeology and continuing use

The original symmetrical entrance range uses carved red sandstone, canted windows and bold gables. A taller later wing, tower and turret make the composition deliberately picturesque, while terraces connect interior hospitality spaces to the coastal setting.

Its story

Salmon, Son and Gillespie designed the first hotel in 1897 and expanded it substantially four years later. Later additions followed changing resort expectations, but the complex has retained hotel use into the present.

Why it is included

Its major architectural authorship, Free Style design and continuing place in Troon’s golf-resort economy make it a strong counterpart to the links clubhouse.

What to notice

  • Red-sandstone gables and carved entrance.
  • Tower and octagonal turret on the expanded range.
  • Terrace walls framing the hotel setting.

Reading the surroundings

The building operates as a hotel. Public restaurant and event spaces have commercial arrangements; guest rooms, spa areas and private functions are not general heritage access. Ask staff before detailed photography.

Timeline

  1. 1897 The first Free Style hotel range opened beside the links.
  2. 1901 A large towered addition created the present expanded composition.
  3. Late 20th century Further hospitality additions adapted the resort to changing expectations.
  4. 2026 Marine Troon continues hotel, dining, events and spa operations.

What we know — and what remains uncertain

Branding, facilities and public-room access remain operational matters and should be checked with the hotel.
