Architecture and continuing use

The two-storey rubble house is gabled beneath a slated roof. A projecting gabled bay gives the front a simple centre, while a single-storey lean-to and gabled offices at the rear preserve the practical service arrangement of the manse.

Its story

The manse was constructed in 1803 beside Livingston Parish Kirk. It housed the ministerial household within the old village before the scale and centre of Livingston shifted with twentieth-century new-town development. Its continued survival maintains the spatial relationship between church and residence.

Why it is included

The building makes the parish kirk legible as an institutional group rather than an isolated monument.

What to notice

  • The small projecting gable on the principal front.
  • Traditional rubble walling and slated roof.
  • Rear service ranges showing how the house functioned.
