Architecture, archaeology and continuing use

Single-storey wings dated 1854 flank a tall two-storey and attic block of 1894. Stugged ashlar, polished dressings, saw-toothed skews and a projecting stair turret give unity to parts that differ clearly in height and stone colour.

Its story

The original wings provided mid-nineteenth-century school accommodation. A substantially larger central block in 1894 expressed the expanding ambitions of secondary education, and the complex continues to serve pupils from the Eskdale area.

Why it is included

Long educational continuity, a visibly phased composition and continuing public use justify inclusion alongside Langholm’s library and hospital.

What to notice

  • Date contrast between the low wings and tall centre.
  • Projecting central stair turret.
  • Saw-toothed stone skews along the gables.
