Architecture and continuing use

The two-storey town hall has a wide curvilinear gable, balcony and attic arch. Beside it, the lower library range advances and recedes around a conical-roofed corner turret. Harled walls, ashlar dressings, small-paned sashes and iron-railed boundaries unify the L-plan group.

Its story

C & L Ower designed the town hall in 1885. Leslie Ower & Allen added the western block in 1913; it began as a recreation room with a library and later became the principal library space. Both functions continue in the civic complex.

Why it is included

Category C listing protects an expressive public ensemble that shows how Kirriemuir enlarged its cultural and civic facilities across two generations.

What to notice

  • The town hall’s curvilinear gable and small balcony.
  • The library’s conical corner turret.
  • Steps and railings that set both buildings back from Reform Street.
