Architecture, archaeology and continuing use
The listed element is the burial-ground wall and the funerary landscape it contains. Memorials from the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries surround the medieval church remains.
Its story
Kilmuir served as a parish burial place over several centuries. The listed-building record was clarified to exclude the separately scheduled remains of Kilmuir Old Parish Church.
Why it is included
Category B listing recognises the designed enclosure and varied memorial landscape while keeping its legal identity distinct from the church ruin.
What to notice
- The continuous coped boundary wall.
- Changing memorial forms across three centuries.
- The relationship between graves and the church ruin.
Reading the surroundings
Respect current burials and mourners, keep to paths where possible and do not touch unstable masonry or memorials.
Timeline
- 18th century onward Surviving memorials document continued burial use.
- 2015 revision The designation explicitly separated the burial ground from scheduled church SM5466.
What we know — and what remains uncertain
