Architecture and continuing use

The two-storey ashlar front uses pilasters, a slightly advanced central bay and a Doric doorpiece to lend authority to a small municipal building. A curved stair and some plasterwork survive inside.

Its story

The offices were erected as Stewarton expanded through weaving and bonnet making. Their public role changed after burgh government ended, while the exterior continued to define the square.

Why it is included

The building records how a growing manufacturing town expressed local government through careful classical stonework.

What to notice

  • The central Doric doorway.
  • Fine ashlar masonry and restrained cornice.
  • The lower extension stepping with the slope.

Reading the surroundings

Do not enter unless a current occupant or advertised event permits it. View from the public square without blocking doors, windows or the roadway.
