Architecture and continuing use

A symmetrical cream-sandstone front is organised around advanced bays, scrolled pediments and carved School Board panels. Mullioned and transomed windows light tall classrooms, while separate labelled entrances and Art Nouveau railings preserve the social planning of Victorian education.

Its story

A school opened here in 1866 and expanded repeatedly as Larkhall grew. The surviving main front dates from 1895, with work dated 1901 and a further block in 1903. Later educational buildings were added elsewhere. The current Glengowan Primary now occupies a modern campus opposite Merryton station rather than this listed complex.

Why it is included

Category C listing recognises a richly detailed local board school, its phased growth and an unusually complete boundary treatment with gendered entrance inscriptions.

What to notice

  • The LARKHALL SCHOOL BOARD carving below the central pediment.
  • BOYS and GIRLS inscriptions on separate gatepiers.
  • Contrasting dates that make the enlargement sequence visible.

Reading the surroundings

Do not enter school or private premises without permission. The active Glengowan Primary is at a different address; view this historic building only from lawful public routes.

Timeline

  1. 1866 Larkhall’s earlier school opened on the site.
  2. 1895 The principal surviving board-school frontage was completed.
  3. 1901–03 Rear and additional blocks enlarged the teaching accommodation.
  4. 2012 A modern Glengowan Primary building opened at Summerlee Road.

What we know — and what remains uncertain

The current school website confirms its modern address but not the exact 2026 occupancy of the listed complex. Interior access and reuse should not be inferred.
