A public service building designed as a landmark

The two-storey Free Renaissance front is framed by octagonal corner towers and built in polished buff sandstone. Moulded openings, carved panels and a central armorial panel give civic weight to what was also a practical postal and sorting complex.

Its story

The Office of Works built the post office in 1894, probably under W W Richardson, its principal architect for Scotland. The rear sorting-office range appears contemporary, with further extension recorded in 1915. Postal services have since moved elsewhere on Channel Street.

Why it is included

It adds communications infrastructure and shows why a historic building name must not be mistaken for a current service location.

What to notice

  • The octagonal towers marking the corners.
  • The central armorial panel and unusually rich entrance carving.
  • The contrast between the formal stone frontage and more utilitarian rear ranges.

Reading the surroundings

The building occupies a prominent town-centre junction. Exterior viewing should respect active pavements, roads and whatever private or commercial uses now occupy the building.

Timeline

  1. 1894 The purpose-built head post office was completed.
  2. 1915 A further extension is recorded.
