Architecture and continuing use
The symmetrical thirteen-bay front is built in red brick with pale sandstone bands and quoins. Advanced gabled ends contain large Venetian windows, while the centre is marked by an inscribed doorway beneath a swan-neck pediment. Above, an octagonal timber bellcote rises to a dome and weather vane.
Its story
The building was constructed late in the nineteenth century for infant education and later adapted as the Midlothian Teachers’ Centre. Alterations included rear additions and rooflights, but the principal Queen Anne composition remains clear. No current operational source was found for the teachers’ centre use.
Why it is included
Its scale, inscription and bellcote make institutional education unusually visible in the streetscape and complement the earlier Cockpen school.
What to notice
- Infant School carved over the central entrance.
- Fish-scale bands within the slate roof.
- The octagonal bellcote and weather vane.
Reading the surroundings
Do not assume that the former education or teachers’ centre names imply public access. Observe from the street and respect any current occupier or site controls.
