Architecture and continuing use

The two-storey dwelling occupies the centre of the composition, while lower limewashed byres project to enclose a working court. Its plain massing and roadside position are characteristic of an established Ayrshire farmstead.

Its story

Historic forms of the Polquhirter name reach back to seventeenth-century mapping. East Polquhirter appears in early nineteenth-century records and the 1855–57 Ordnance Survey Name Book described it as a farmhouse; later valuation rolls record changing owners and tenants.

Why it is included

The group provides a modest but legible agricultural counterpart to the town’s civic and ecclesiastical buildings and preserves an old landscape name.

What to notice

  • The central two-storey farmhouse.
  • Projecting gabled byres around the court.
  • The relationship between the group, road and Polquhirter Burn landscape.

Reading the surroundings

Treat the entire group as private property. View only from legal public routes, do not enter drives or working yards, and avoid obstructing road traffic.
