Architecture, archaeology and continuing use
A red-sandstone Roman Doric column stands on a panelled pedestal and modern plinth. A triglyph frieze, overhanging cornice, cubic sundial and acorn finial compress classical civic symbolism into a slender monument.
Its story
The cross took its recognisable form in 1792. It was dismantled when the Town House occupied the square, re-erected in the Public Park for Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee and returned to the market space during improvements in 1994.
Why it is included
The cross is a compact but highly legible record of burgh trade, proclamation, punishment and changing ideas about the civic centre.
What to notice
- Fluted or plain Doric column and panelled base.
- Triglyph frieze and projecting cornice.
- Cubic sundial beneath the acorn finial.
Reading the surroundings
The cross stands in public space near vehicles and pedestrians. View without climbing the plinth, blocking movement or leaning objects against the stonework.
