Architecture, archaeology and continuing use

Harl-pointed rubble and tooled dressings unite the single-storey school and two-storey teacher's dwelling. The latter has an Italianate round-headed upper window and pyramidal roof, while the 1873 school bay has a large segmental window and dated keystone.

Its story

The Episcopal school and teacher's house were built by 1840 under the patronage of George Gillanders of Highfield. An additional school bay and porch were added in 1873 as the educational complex developed.

Why it is included

Category B listing protects an expressive rural school group whose form records both teaching space and the status of its resident teacher.

What to notice

  • The Italianate teacher's house beside the lower school.
  • The 1873 date in the new bay's keystone.
  • Surviving lying-pane glazing and the small roof finial.
