Architecture, archaeology and continuing use

The long single-storey red-rubble range has yellow ashlar dressings, grouped windows, gablets and a taller projecting block. A three-stage belfry with a bell-cast roof rises beside the former entrance, while a two-storey school house completes the composition.

Its story

Andrew Maitland and Sons designed the school in 1875–76 for 250 pupils, then returned for alterations in 1890 and 1904. Current Highland Council education material continues to identify Cromarty Primary School.

Why it is included

Category B listing recognises a vigorous Gothic educational complex whose scale and detailing express the civic importance attached to schooling.

What to notice

  • The compact belfry and weather vane.
  • Grouped windows under small linked gables.
  • Cruciform gatepiers along the boundary.

Reading the surroundings

Observe only from public space unless attending for an authorised school purpose. Do not photograph pupils, enter the grounds or obstruct drop-off areas.
