Architecture and continuing use

The church is organised around a balanced front with a tower at its centre. Rounded Norman Revival forms and the change from square tower to octagonal spire produce a strong, easily read silhouette from Main Street.

Its story

The church developed from a chapel constituted in 1838 as Barrhead’s population expanded. The building was probably completed about 1843. After the 1929 reunion of the Church of Scotland and United Free Church it took the Bourock name, and the congregation remains active.

Why it is included

Category B listing recognises a prominent mid-nineteenth-century church whose form and continuing congregation connect religious provision with Barrhead’s industrial expansion.

What to notice

  • The transition from central square tower to octagonal spire.
  • The symmetrical arrangement of the principal front.
  • Rounded Norman Revival openings and details.

Reading the surroundings

Attend only advertised services or activities, or arrange access with the congregation. Respect worship and community events and do not assume the tower or ancillary spaces are open.

Timeline

  1. 1838 A constitution established the Barrhead chapel serving the growing settlement.
  2. c. 1843 The present Norman Revival church was completed.
  3. 1929 The congregation adopted the Barrhead Bourock name after national church union.

What we know — and what remains uncertain

The construction date is approximate and the current designation does not identify an architect. Service times can change, so the congregation’s notices take precedence.
