The building

The U-plan frontage combines projecting wings, dressed stone window margins and small paired dormers. Vaulted cellars and a stone stair are recorded inside.

Its story

HES dates the house to 1744 on the site of a residence of the bishops of Caithness. It was also associated with the Lords of Reay. The garden has a lintel dated 1863, while the listing records nineteenth-century interior alterations.

Why it is included

Its enclosed court and carefully arranged openings offer a compact example of formal domestic architecture in a coastal setting.

What to look for

  • The courtyard arrangement from an authorised viewpoint
  • Crow-stepped gables and contrasting window margins

Reading the surroundings

The house stands near the old church and shore. Its private domestic setting should be respected.

What we know — and what remains uncertain

Published interpretations differ about earlier fabric. Highland’s heritage record preserves both suggestions of older work and OS observations that no earlier work was visible; the present house should not simply be called the surviving medieval bishop’s residence.
