The building
Decorative pierced boards edge the gables, while deep eaves shelter the former platform. The covered carriage entrance and royal waiting room distinguish it from a simple rural station.
Its story
The station opened in 1866 and was remodelled in 1886. Railway use ended in 1966. Fire caused extensive destruction in May 2015. Morgan Sindall reported completion of its restoration work in July 2018, including reinstated principal elevations, the royal waiting room, a library and enlarged exhibition space.
Why it is included
It connects railway architecture and royal travel with the practical questions raised by reconstruction after fire.
What to look for
- The ornamental gable boards.
- The shelter over the former platform.
- The relationship between the public station spaces and royal accommodation.
Reading the surroundings
The station fronts Station Square; the listed designation also includes the platform.

What we know — and what remains uncertain
The listing’s detailed interior description predates the 2015 fire. It should not be read as a component-by-component record of original material surviving today.
