Architecture and continuing use

Kellock Brown’s life-size seated female figure rests on a substantial ashlar plinth carrying bronze commemorative panels. The low, composed silhouette differs from the obelisks and standing soldiers used for many contemporary memorials.

Its story

The memorial was created in 1921 after the First World War and later served successive acts of local remembrance. Council records identify the memorial and garden as common-good-associated space, and recent remembrance processions continue to use it.

Why it is included

Category C listing recognises a distinctive work of public sculpture and its continuing communal importance in the Market Muir setting.

What to notice

  • The seated rather than standing bronze figure.
  • Bronze name panels set into the stone plinth.
  • The memorial’s open relationship with its garden and road approaches.

Reading the surroundings

Approach by public paths and treat the monument as a place of remembrance. Do not climb, sit on the plinth or touch the bronze, and yield space during ceremonies.

What we know — and what remains uncertain

The concise national record does not explain the figure’s intended identity or symbolism, so interpretation remains cautious.
