Architecture and continuing use
The two-storey range is rendered and harled beneath gabled slate roofs with skews. Its significance lies in the repeated scale, roofline and shared street frontage rather than elaborate individual ornament.
Its story
The range belongs to the first generations of development after Port Ellen was founded in the early 1820s. Later finishes and domestic alteration have not erased the collective form of the five-property group.
Why it is included
It represents ordinary housing essential to understanding the planned town, balancing landmark churches, industry and maritime structures.
What to notice
- The continuous two-storey scale across five properties.
- Subtle differences between rendered and harled surfaces.
- Gables, slate roof and stone skews above the street.
Reading the surroundings
View from the public street without photographing into windows or obstructing residents. All interiors, gardens and closes should be treated as private.

What we know — and what remains uncertain
