An emphatic harbourfront house

Three storeys and five window bays give the house a broad, regular frontage. Painted margins contrast with the harling; crowstepped ends and a curving central wallhead gable break the pantiled roofline. A pend passes through the frontage, and a blank panel sits above the doorway. HES also records an original panelled first-floor interior and a coach house to the rear.

A qualified date

HES describes the house as reputedly built in 1686, but allows a very early eighteenth-century date. The building is therefore recorded here with that uncertainty intact. The designation’s note that restoration was under way in 1972 is a historical observation, not a statement about work taking place today.

Viewing

The May 2021 photograph shows the full street frontage and its distinctive central gable. This is a house; the image and designation do not imply permission to enter the pend, interior or rear ground. The surviving interior is described from HES’s account, not from an interior visit for this record.
